Intern Story – A.J. Baker

Coming from the University of Missouri, Columbia, A.J. filled our Food and Beverage Supervisor Intern role. Majoring in Hospitality Management, with an emphasis in Sports Venue Management, A.J. stepped a little bit outside his normal bounds for the internship; however, A.J. spoke highly of the role shift, saying “Food and Beverage is great, I could really see myself working in this industry in the future.” A.J.’s day to day operations are spread out across four of our biggest food and beverage outlets: Eat Up Buffett, Hollywood and Grind, Celebrity Grill and Phat Tai. A.J. does a little bit of everything, from counting inventory, to handling guest interactions, to counting out drawers, and of course building relationships with fellow team members. Additionally, A.J. gained some experience in the beverage department and spent a couple days learning fine dining management.

His big projects included revamping the room service liquor list with fellow supervisor Landon, and working on a project analysis assignment with three other interns, which was later presented to the property leadership team. It’s the best job that I’ve had, I really enjoy coming to work and the friendships I’ve created,” remarked A.J. of the experience as a whole. “It’s a fun environment where I’ve been able to gain leadership and management skills.” A.J.’s advice for his successor is to “Come in with a great attitude, especially as a supervisor.” His biggest takeaway from the Internship experience was all the different leadership styles he was able to emulate. He consistently shadowed six different managers, which allowed him to sample a variety of management skills. We want to thank A.J. for his experience at Hollywood Casino, and wish him the best of luck in the continuance of his studies!
